the rigveda is earliest collection of prayers addressed to the various gods. it is divided into ten books called mandalas and the number of hymns in this veda is 1017, or if the 11 supplementary hymns called valakhilya inserted in the middle of the 8th book, are added, 1028. the number of hymns mandalawise is: first 191, second 43, third 62, fourth 58, fifth 87, sixth 75, seventh 104, eighth 103, nineth 114, tenth 191. the largest number of hymns are in praise of indra and agni. the rest are addressed to mitra etc. as shown in hindi. mandalas 2-6 are homogeneous. the first, eighth and tenth mandalas are not homogeneous as they are not the productions of a single family of seers. the ninth book stands quite apart, as it is addressed to soma alone. comparative religion, comparative mythology and comparative philology, all viewed together, indicate about 3000 bc. as the date of compilation of the rigveda.
