पृथुः

महाराज वेन का पुत्र

prithu was the son of vena, who yas wicked and therefore killed bu the sages. but on his death anarchy prevailed on earth, who withheld her produce from men. the sages thereupon rubbed the right arm of the dead king and from it sprang prithu, the magnanimous king. on being enthroned he threatened the earth, asking her to yield her produce; she agreed to do the needful if a calf was given to her to milk her affectionately. prithu thereupon gave her swayambhuva manu as the calf, milked the earth and received the milk into his own hand, from which proceeded all kinds of corn, vegetables, fruits etc. for the maintenance of his subjects. this example of prithu was followed by sages and others, who found out the proper milkman and calf from their own numner and milked the earth of whatever they wanted. this has been hinted at by kalidasa in his kumarasambhavam, agni, vishnu, mahadeva

उदाहरणम् : पृथूपदिष्टां दुदुहुर्धरित्रीम्

विवरणम् : एक राजा जिसके नाम पर पृथ्वी यह नाम पड़ा था । विष्णुपुराण के अनुसार वेण एक पापी राजा था और उसे ऋषियों ने मार दिया था । राजा के अभाव में धरती पर कुहराम मच गया । तब ऋषियों ने मृत राजा की दक्षिण भुजा को मला जिससे एक पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ; उसी का नाम पृथु पड़ा । वेण के मरने पर धरती ने फल-फूल देने बन्द कर दिये थे और प्रजा में हाहाकार मच गया था । पृथु ने धनुष लेकर धरती को ललकारा‚ वह डर गई और उसने फल-फूल फिर से देने आरम्भ कर दिये । किन्तु इसके लिये एक शर्त थी कि पृथु धरती को एक बछड़ा दे‚ जिसे चुंघाकर वह शस्यादि देगी । पृथु ने स्वायंभुव मनु को बछड़ा बनाया‚ जिसने धरती को चूंघकर दूध के रूप में उससे शस्यादि की प्राप्ति की ।
